Hot orange stems in winter.

Best known for its fiery displays of bare stems in autumn and winter providing some much needed colour in those bleak dark winter months. Frozen cobwebs between the branches look great too.

A quick growing, suckering shrub that looks super in groups or planted with other dogwoods for a colourful autumn and winter display.
In summer off white clusters of flowers are loved by pollinating insects. The flowers often produce white berries with a blue hue that are loved by the birds.

In autumn as the weather cools the dark green leaves turn through a colourful range, in shades of yellow, orange and red before falling.

Prune every 2nd or 3rd year all stems in late winter / early spring to 15cm (6in) above ground. This will stimulate the plant to produce lots more lush colourful shoots. To keep it more controlled simply prune hard all stems each spring.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

A fire of stems

Bare winter stems shade from yellow at the base through orange to red tips, so a group reads like a low fire across the border.

Bees and birds

Summer's flat white flower heads feed bees and other pollinators, and the berries that follow give blackbirds and thrushes something to forage in autumn.

Best colour in sun

Grown in an open sunny spot the leaves colour most strongly in autumn, running through yellow and orange to red before they fall.

About This Plant

Blood-twig dogwood grows wild across Europe and into western Asia, and this selection was found in a German garden by H. Venhorst around 1980, taking its name a decade later. Its reputation rests on the winter stems, but the show starts earlier as the dark green summer leaves warm into their autumn shades.

It suckers and grows quickly, so give it room to spread or lift the odd sucker to keep it in bounds. For the best stem colour, cut about a third of the oldest stems to the ground each spring rather than pruning the whole plant hard, which keeps a framework while renewing the young wood.
