An ideal way to add all year-round colour with a versatile and uncomplicated Ilex Golden Gem, also known as Japanese Holly.

Evergreen, hardy, drought tolerant, disease resistant, the list of positives goes on and on and it is no wonder the RHS have given this wonderful shrub an AGM.

Low growing and therefore perfect as ground cover, Golden Gem can be pruned to your desired shape, happy in any sized garden and can even be used as topiary. The petite golden yellow leaves really do add a jolly splash of colour and a simple prune each year means this is pleasingly low maintenance. If using as a hedge, trim to shape in late Summer.

About This Plant

Wild across Japan's hills, Japanese holly evolved its tiny leaves and dense habit long before topiarists took an interest, and Golden Gem is a female selection carrying small white flowers in spring followed, sparingly, by little jet black berries. Its naturally low, spreading outline settles into a neat cushion of its own accord.

There is little to do beyond one trim a year, in late summer if you keep it as a formal shape. It prefers soil on the acid side of neutral and appreciates water through its first summer while roots get down; after that it takes dry spells in its stride.
