What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS award winner

Held with the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Splendens is rated the most dependable bottlebrush for the British climate after years of assessment.

A magnet for bees

The crimson brushes are loaded with nectar and pull in bees through late spring and summer, humming with them on warm days.

Lemon-scented leaves

Crush a leaf between your fingers and it gives off a clean citrus scent, the trait behind the plant's citrinus name.

About This Plant

Bottlebrushes hail from eastern Australia, where the crimson spikes evolved to draw nectar-feeding birds. This one has been trained as a quarter standard, a clear stem topped by a rounded head, which lifts the evergreen foliage and flowers to eye level and makes a single specimen for a large pot.

In a container it earns a sheltered corner out of hard frost and cold wind, with steady watering through the growing season. Snipping off the spent brushes once they fade keeps the head tidy and encourages a second lighter show later in the year.
