Supplied as a half standard fruit tree in a 3 litre pot, this ready established addition to your garden will give you many months of interest for many years to come. Small white, bell shaped flowers will open in the Spring followed by the marvelous maroon red, juicy, plump fruits in the Summer ideal in desserts, pies, jams, jellies or as a juicy treat straight from the tree! The culinary uses are endless for this versatile fruit. With an upright growth habit reaching approximately 1.5 metres in height throughout a 2-5 year period, this would be perfect in a decorative planter as a real talking point with juicy gooseberries ready to pick this summer. Gooseberries are easy to grow soft fruits with high fruit yields in July and this variety is ideally suited to the bred for the British climate.

Standard shaped trees look great in containers but even more so when the base of the plant is underplanted with flowering bedding. Includes 1x 3 litre Gooseberry Hinnomaki Red Plant

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Sweet dessert berries

Left to ripen fully, the deep wine-red berries turn sweet and juicy enough to eat straight from the plant, or pick early and green for cooking.

Shrugs off mildew

Bred with strong resistance to American gooseberry mildew, it suits organic growers and crops reliably without constant spraying against fungal trouble.

Heavy, dependable crop

A reliable, heavy cropper that ripens in mid-July, giving generous pickings for desserts, pies, jams and jellies from a single trained plant.

About This Plant

The Hinnonmaki Red was bred in Finland and has spread to become one of the most widely grown gooseberries across Europe, valued for its toughness in cold conditions. Grown here as a half standard on a clear stem, it makes a neat, sculptural shape that suits a decorative planter and rewards underplanting with low bedding.

The berries do not store fresh, though they freeze well, so plan to pick and use or bag them quickly. Give it a sheltered spot and free-draining ground, and prune to keep the head open, which lets in light and air and helps the fruit ripen evenly.
