What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Spring cups on bare wood

Goblet blooms open on bare branches in early spring, some reaching 25cm across, giving a strong show weeks before the leaves unfurl.

Copes with chalk

Unusually for a magnolia, it copes with chalky, alkaline soil and shrugs off wind better than most, widening where you can plant it.

Early forage

The early cups draw beetles and warm-day bees hunting pollen, giving a food source in a lean stretch of the gardening year.

About This Plant

Étienne Soulange-Bodin crossed Magnolia denudata with Magnolia liliiflora at his garden near Paris, and the hybrid first flowered in 1826. More than a hundred named forms have followed since. The rounded blooms range through white, pink and soft maroon, and in a long hot summer the plant may set an odd cluster of fruit.

Pruning is best kept light, since magnolias heal slowly and resent hard cutting. Choose a spot clear of frost pockets, as a cold snap can brown the opening flowers overnight. A spring mulch of leaf mould keeps the shallow roots cool and feeds steady growth without fuss.
