The star magnolia for containers or borders.

A truly lovely plant with bright white many petalled flowers. Slow growing reaching is full height in 20 years. Greyish stems grow almost vertically when young becoming more horizontal with age making a rounded shrub.

At the end of the stems, in spring, silky silver feather down flower buds grow to reveal pure white flowers with up to 12 tepals ( petals) and a light fragrance.

Depending on the air temperature the flowers may have a pink hue. Its leaves arrive after flowering has finished and begin bronze tinted fading to light green.

Plant supplied in a 5 litre pot

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Star flowers on bare stems

Slender, strap-like tepals open flat into a star, up to a dozen per flower, covering the bare branches in white before the leaves show.

Early food for bees

Among the earliest magnolias to open, the flowers give bees and other insects nectar at a lean time when few shrubs are yet in bloom.

Silvery winter buds

Through winter the branches carry silvery, felted buds like small catkins, giving something to look at long before the flowers break open.

About This Plant

The star magnolia comes from a small area of central Japan, where it grows in damp hillside woodland. Western gardeners have grown it since the late nineteenth century, when the nursery firm Veitch introduced it to Britain, and it has since gained the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability.

New leaves emerge bronze-tinted before settling to soft green, and the shrub broadens slowly, taking many years to fill its final frame. It is one of the easier magnolias, wanting only a soil that holds moisture yet drains, and shelter from cold winds that can brown the opening petals. Little pruning is needed.
