A compact evergreen shrub with all year round interest and extremely easy to care for.

Perfectly happy in a container or the garden bed/border, this shrub will give a stunning display with colour changing foliage. The young, fiery red springtime leaves turn green with maturity in the Summer as it bears panicles of tiny white flowers with another flush of brilliant red throughout the outer leaves in the Autumn.

Often called 'Heavenly Bamboo' the leaves of this delightful shrub make a delicate rustling sound in the breeze.

Supplied as an established shrub in a 4.5 litre pot

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Year-round red

Fresh shoots come through bright red for much of the year, then a second wave of red washes across the outer leaves each autumn.

Winter shape in a pot

The neat evergreen frame stays dressed all winter and holds its shape in a pot by the door or at the front of a bed.

Summer flower panicles

Panicles of tiny white flowers appear in early summer, a soft contrast to the fine, feathery leaves that give sacred bamboo its name.

About This Plant

Obsessed began as a chance sport of 'Gulf Stream', spotted in 2005 at a nursery in Magnolia, Texas, and carries the cultivar name Seika, meaning sacred fire in Japanese. Its young growth glows deep red before settling to green, with a further red flush over the outer leaves as autumn takes hold.

Once its roots take, it copes well with dry spells and needs very little attention. Thin out the oldest canes at ground level every so often to keep the clump fresh and open. The leaves stir with a light rustle in a breeze, which is where the heavenly bamboo name comes from.
