Soft lavender pink flowers turning white with age.

The colour changing blooms on this Parahebe gives the plant a wonderful two-tone effect. Flowering from May through to September, Pink Avalanche is a semi-evergreen with small spikes for flower on a beautifully compact and tidy plant.

Plant in full sun or partial shade and remove faded flower spikes to encourage new blooms. Being semi-evergreen this shrub may lose some or all of its foliage, particularly in colder winters.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Months of changing colour

Small lavender pink spikes open from May and keep coming into September, fading to white so two tones share the plant at once.

Bees keep visiting

The open speedwell-like flowers suit short-tongued insects, so bees and hoverflies work the spikes right through summer.

Neat enough for pots

At around knee height with a tidy, mounded habit, it sits happily in a container or at the front of a small border.

About This Plant

Raised at Seiont Nurseries near Caernarfon in North Wales, Pink Avalanche is a selection of Parahebe catarractae, a small shrubby speedwell that grows wild beside rocky streams in New Zealand. That parentage shows in its wiry, dark stems and the small glossy leaves that persist through a mild winter.

Care is light. Snip away faded flower spikes every week or two in summer and fresh buds follow, then leave the framework alone until spring, when a trim keeps the plant dense. After a hard winter it can look bare for a while, though established plants generally shoot again from low down.
