Sweetly scented Mock Orange. No garden should be without this shrub. For fragrance its almost unbeatable. Its creamy white single flowers adorn the plant in summer whilst its deciduous dark green leaves turn a lovely autumnal shade of yellow.
Philadelphus is a large shrub, but very easily controlled and will happily cope with a hard prune each year after flowering if required.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Fragrance that carries

The orange-blossom scent from its creamy summer flowers drifts across the garden on warm evenings, reaching well beyond the shrub itself.

A century of merit

Raised in France in 1909, Virginal earned the RHS Award of Garden Merit back in 1926 and still ranks among the best mock oranges.

Happy on chalk

It settles into chalk, clay, sand or loam without complaint, giving thin alkaline soils a scented flowering shrub where choices are limited.

About This Plant

Victor Lemoine bred this at his Nancy nursery in 1909, and it became the most planted of all the mock orange hybrids. The blooms open cup-shaped and pure white, each around five centimetres across, carrying the orange-blossom fragrance the whole genus is grown for.

Growth is upright and a little gaunt with age, and the deciduous leaves finish yellow before falling. It flowers on the previous year's wood, so timing the one important job matters: prune straight after the flowers fade, taking out old stems to the base to keep young growth coming. Cut in winter and you lose the next display.
