Colour changing foliage.

Physocarpus Little Joker is a compact variety of Physocarpus which has wonderful colour changing foliage, starting orange before turning a deep shade of burgundy red with maturity.

This low-maintenance, disease resistant, deciduous shrub bears white flowers in early Summer which are followed by red berries later in the year.

Fully hardy to -30c, an easy shrub to grow in the garden or pots and containers and offers a real wow factor!

Grow in full sun or part shade.

Supplied as 1 x 4.5ltr srhub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Foliage that changes colour

New shoots emerge orange and deepen to dark burgundy as they mature, so the shrub carries two warm tones at once through the growing season.

Flowers then berries

White early summer blossom feeds bees and hoverflies, and the red berries that follow are taken by garden birds as autumn wears on.

Hardy almost anywhere

Fully hardy to minus thirty, it shrugs off frost pockets, cold gardens and exposed plots that finish off less rugged shrubs, yet stays small enough for pots.

About This Plant

A wave of dwarf ninebarks has come out of breeding programmes in recent years, and Little Joker brings the colour of the big border varieties down to container scale. Its small, finely cut leaves give a neater, more crimped texture than its larger relatives, the stems building into a dense, twiggy dome.

Disease resistance is built in, so the mildew that can trouble older ninebark varieties rarely appears. Pruning is the one job that matters, taking a share of the oldest stems down to ground level in late winter so fresh, brightly coloured shoots keep coming from the base.
