Create structure in the simplest of ways.

Also known at the Portuguese Laurel, this hardy evergreen has been awarded an RHS AGM for its reliable performance and is extremely easy to care for.

The perfect shrub to create a hedge with deep red stems bearing small white flowers in the Summer followed by red berries in the Autumn, fabulous all year-round interest.

Pruning is not essential but can be carried out in the Spring if required, remove any dead or damaged stems and feed with a slow-release fertiliser just twice a year.

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown plant which is approximately 30cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Portugal laurel holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognised for dependable growth and its dense, glossy evergreen cover.

Thrives on chalk

It settles happily into shallow, chalky soils and shrugs off coastal exposure, giving green screening where conditions defeat softer hedging plants.

Flowers and berries

Early summer flowers draw bees, and the dark berries that follow give blackbirds and thrushes a source of autumn food.

About This Plant

Portugal laurel comes from the Iberian peninsula, from Spain and Portugal, and has served British gardens as hedging for generations. Its deep red leaf stalks set off the dark, leathery foliage, and the whole plant knits into a solid, wind-firm wall of green given room to mature.

It grows slowly and needs almost nothing from you. Clipping is optional and best done in late spring once frost has passed, and a feed of slow-release fertiliser twice a year keeps growth dense. Remove any frost-damaged shoots as new growth appears.
