Columnar shaped upright Yew.

Commonly called the English Yew - Taxus baccata - this evergreen tree has been cultivated to form "Fastigiata Robusta" a slender sky rocket shape making it an ideal specimen to add a statement to your border.

Slow growing attractive evergreen plant with dense non prickly needle like foliage on the multiple upright stems. In winter the foliage turns so deep green it is almost black.
In autumn this plant may produce red berries for the birds from insignificant flowers in summer.

With origins dating back hundreds of years, yew trees make fantastic clipped hedges and topiary shapes appearing within the grounds of historical buildings, stately homes and churches. All parts of Yew are poisonous and they were often used to mark private land so common folks grazing animals were kept away.

Easy to care for this cultivar requires very little attention.
*When handling always use gloves and wash hands after handling. *POISONOUS IF EATEN*

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown plant which is approximately 30cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Berries for birds

Late summer brings red arils that hawfinches, greenfinches and great tits pick over through autumn, drawing birds into an otherwise quiet corner of the garden.

Dark winter structure

The needled foliage deepens almost to black in cold weather, holding a strong vertical line in the border when deciduous plants have dropped their leaves.

Copes with shade and chalk

English yew tolerates deep shade and shallow chalk soils, so this narrow column earns a spot where sun lovers would sulk and thin.

About This Plant

The English yew has been grown in Britain for centuries, marking churchyards and stately grounds long before it reached ordinary gardens. 'Fastigiata Robusta' is a selected upright form, narrower and more sharply columnar than the old Irish yew, giving a rocket-like outline from a single plant.

Growth is slow and steady, which keeps the tight shape without constant work. One light clip in late summer holds the column crisp. Every part of the plant is poisonous, so wear gloves when trimming and keep clippings away from grazing animals.
