Longer Days, Brighter Blooms: Essential February Gardening Tips to Kickstart Spring

Longer Days, Brighter Blooms: Essential February Gardening Tips to Kickstart Spring

As fellow outdoor lovers I am certain you’ll have all noticed that the days are slowly but surely starting to get longer, with the sun coming up just that bit earlier in the mornings and going down that little bit later in the evenings.  In early February in the UK we average around 9 hours of daylight but by the time we reach the end of the month we will have gained a whole extra hour, bringing us up to 10 hours.  What welcome news for those of us that would much rather be out there than sat indoors!

We love to spend any time we can outside, even in February, and fortunately there are plenty of things to keep us busy, pottering around in the garden, when we get a moment.

Now is the perfect time, as long as the ground isn’t frozen, to give a little love to those hard-working herbaceous perennials that give you so much pleasure every Summer.  Dividing large clumps in February is an easy job that will pay you back for your efforts in abundance.  Simply dig up the root ball and split into two, three or four parts depending on how large your clump is.  This can be done easily using a couple of garden forks or even a sharp spade.  Replant the clumps around the border adding a little slow-release fertiliser as you go.  Not only will the plants put on an extra special display for you this year to say thank you, but you’ve also got yourself some new plants for free!

It's also time to give your Wisteria a little haircut.  Prune back stems to two or three buds.  By taking the time to do this now you will ensure those gorgeous, prized flowers won’t be hidden by the foliage when they start to bloom in late Spring and early Summer.

Last, but by no means least, February is a great time to feed those shrubs and roses.  A quick sprinkle of slow-release fertiliser at the end of Winter/beginning of Spring is just what they need to get themselves all fired up to give you fantastic displays throughout the Spring and Summer.  Try using our Fed N Done fertiliser for a quick and easy solution to your feeding requirements.  Apply once now and again in the Autumn, as simple as that.  Don’t forget to use Fed N Done Ericaceous plant food for your Rhododendrons, Camellias and other acid loving plants.  Just one scoop of Fed N Done is enough to treat 30 litres of compost and at the moment all our pouches contain 50% extra free so why not stock up now!
