Bountiful crops of Blueberries from your garden.

This self fertile blueberry is a sure fire winner for growing your own fruit. In spring clusters of waxy pink tinged buds open to reveal white papery bell shaped blooms.
The flower petals fall to reveal green blueberries which ripen to navy blue from late July onwards. You will pick handfuls of delicious medium sized fruits straight from the plant this summer.

A great looking all year round plant - in autumn its leaves turn shades of orange and yellow whilst in winter its bare stems are an attractive yellowy green.
An ideal patio plant as it requires ericaceous compost (acidic soil) which perform even better when watered with rainwater.

Blueberries are slow growing plants requiring minimal maintenance. Simply prune some of the unwanted thin twiggy growth in late winter and after its 3rd year prune out some of the older growth to promote new strong growth from the base.

Supplied as a mature 5 litre plant which is approximately 40-50cm tall

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Fruit without a partner

Bluegold is self-fertile, so a single plant sets a heavy crop of firm, sweet berries that all ripen together over a short mid-summer picking window.

Autumn and winter colour

After fruiting the leaves turn shades of orange and yellow, then the bare stems glow a warm yellow-green through winter, so a pot stays interesting.

Spring blossom for bees

Clusters of white bell-shaped flowers open in spring and draw bees, whose visits improve pollination and give you a fuller crop of berries.

About This Plant

Bluegold was raised by breeders at the United States Department of Agriculture and released in 1989, a northern highbush type valued for its firm, evenly sized fruit. It grows slowly into a spreading, rounded bush and asks for little once established, quietly building a productive framework year on year.

It must have ericaceous compost, since ordinary soil locks up the iron it needs and yellows the leaves, and rainwater rather than tap water keeps it happiest. Prune out thin twiggy growth in late winter, and from the third year cut away some of the oldest stems to draw fresh shoots from the base.
