An unusual deciduous shrub bearing burgundy red flowers that are almost water-lily like in shape.

Known as the Spicebush because its flowers have a fruity fragrance whilst its bark has a camphor scent when scratched. With dense glossy, yellow green foliage this plant really fills a spot in the border. After flowering an urn shaped fruit capsule is formed for the birds. Note all parts are NOT suitable for human consumption.

A hardy, low maintenance shrub that can be grown in beds, borders or large pots with a simple trim after flowering to keep in shape. Remove some of the thicker stems every few years to encourage fresh stems.

Supplied in a 3 litre pot with an approximate height of 40-60cm

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Spice-scented bark

Scratch a stem and the bark releases a warm camphor scent, while the flowers themselves carry a fruity note over the summer.

Fruit capsules for birds

After flowering the shrub forms curious urn-shaped seed capsules that hang on into autumn and give the birds something to pick over.

Water-lily shaped blooms

The deep burgundy flowers open flat and many-petalled, an unusual water-lily shape that sits close against the dense green foliage.

About This Plant

The species is a native of the south-eastern United States, where it grows in woodland and along stream banks, and it has been grown in British gardens since the eighteenth century. Every part of it is aromatic, from the fruity flowers to the bark, which is where the common name spicebush comes from.

Little attention is needed once it is settled. A light trim after the flowers fade keeps it shapely, and taking out a few of the thickest older stems every couple of years lets younger growth come through. All parts are best kept away from mouths, as they are not for eating.
