Striking silver foliage and rich blue flowers.

A deciduous and fully hardy shrub which bears brilliant blue flowers in later summer from August to September.

The aromatic foliage on this beautiful shrub is silver grey in colour which sets off the blooms beautifully.

A more compact variety, Sterling Silver is ideal for pots and containers or smaller gardens and is easy to grow and care for, being drought tolerant once established and holding the RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding garden performance

Plant in full sun for best results, leaving spent flower heads on over winter and prune to shape in spring.

Supplied as 1 x 3 Ltr shrub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Aromatic silver leaves

Brush the grey silver foliage on the way past and it releases a clean herbal scent that stays on your fingers.

Shrugs off dry summers

Once its roots are down it copes well with drought, making it a sound choice for hot borders and free draining soil.

Late nectar for pollinators

Deep blue August and September flowers are rich in nectar and pollen, feeding bees and butterflies at the tail end of the season.

About This Plant

Bluebeards of this type trace back to a chance seedling that appeared in Arthur Simmonds' garden at West Clandon in Surrey in the 1930s, a cross between two Asian species. Sterling Silver is a modern selection from Peter Catt's Hampshire nursery, picked out for its unusually pale, metallic leaf colour.

Leave the seed heads standing over winter, when the pale stems have a quiet appeal of their own, then prune hard to low buds in spring. Flowers and fresh silver growth both come on the new wood, so an annual cut renews the whole plant and stops it turning woody at the base.
