What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Royal Horticultural Society gave Concha its Award of Garden Merit, recognition earned for reliable performance across a wide range of British gardens.

Bees and butterflies in spring

Bees and butterflies work the nectar-rich blooms in late spring, a time when many other flowering shrubs have yet to reach their peak.

Thrives on dry, chalky ground

Settles happily on dry and alkaline soils where fussier shrubs struggle, holding its dark evergreen leaves right through the winter months.

About This Plant

Concha belongs to the Californian lilacs, a group of evergreen shrubs raised from species native to the American west coast. Its narrow, dark green leaves stay put all year, and the deep blue flowers open from reddish-purple buds, giving a brief two-tone effect as each cluster unfurls.

It asks little once established. Any shaping is best done straight after the flowers fade, since the shrub dislikes hard cutting into old wood. On thin chalk the leaves sometimes yellow, so an annual mulch keeps new growth green and the plant settled.
