Crimson red flowers and golden fruits!

This fabulous variety of Chaenomeles, or Japanese Quince, is more compact than many others, but is fast growing, making a wonderful gap filler in garden.

Flowering from March through to May it brings a welcome splash of colour when the garden may otherwise be looking a little sparse.  Grow either as wall shrub or stand alone, Chaenomeles Crimson and Gold will bear crimson red flowers with a yellow centre which are then followed by golden, aromatic fruits which can be used to makes jellies or preserves.

Fully hardy and deciduous in habit, plant in full sun or partial shade.  Crimson & Gold has been awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its stand-out garden performance.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Early food for bees

Some of the season's first nectar arrives with its crimson blooms and golden anthers, drawing hungry bees out of hibernation before most shrubs have woken.

Fruit for the kitchen

Aromatic golden quinces follow the flowers and ripen through autumn, rich in pectin and long used for homemade jellies and preserves.

Thrives on a shady wall

Happy trained against a cold north-facing wall where sunnier shrubs sulk, and untroubled by chalk, clay or sandy ground.

About This Plant

Crimson and Gold belongs to Chaenomeles × superba, a garden cross valued for the intensity of its colour. Flowers open along bare, thorny stems before the glossy mid-green leaves unfurl, so the crimson reads brightly against dark wood. Growth is quick and it builds a dense, twiggy framework.

Two jobs keep it in good order. Prune once flowering finishes, shortening the sideshoots that carried blooms to build flowering spurs for the following year. Trained flat against a wall, tie in new growth and cut back outward-facing shoots. On very limey soil, watch for yellowing leaves.
