Months of sweetly scented, pink, frilly edged tubular blooms on a large plant with willow like foliage.
Flowering from late spring to autumn this specimen shrub prefers in a full sun location where it will not disappoint.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent that carries

The frilled, tubular flowers release a sweet fragrance that drifts on warm air, so plant it near a seat or path where you pass.

Copes with drought

Willow-like foliage and deep roots let it flower on through dry summers that leave thirstier shrubs wilting and flowerless.

No seed mess

As a sterile hybrid it sets no seed pods, so energy goes into a long run of blooms rather than autumn clear-up.

About This Plant

Chitalpa came from an unusual cross between the desert willow, Chilopsis, and the catalpa, made at a botanical garden in Tashkent by the plantsman N.F. Rusanov. Summer Bells inherits slender, willowy leaves from one parent and large, frilled trumpet flowers from the other, a pairing found in neither on its own.

Growth is quick and the wood stays soft, so a sheltered spot away from strong wind protects the display. Little pruning is needed, but any shaping is best done in late winter before growth begins. Keep young plants watered through their first summers until the roots reach down.
