Early to flower with bell shaped blue blooms.

Blue Dancer is a beautiful, deciduous Clematis that bears beautiful, delicate blue blooms with a nodding, bell shaped appearance and a creamy yellow centre.

Flowering from April to May, this early flowerer puts on a spectacular display in the Spring garden and is loved by the pollinating insects.

After flowering, fluffy seed pods appear on the plant to give a wonderful effect.

Plant in full sun or partial shade and remember to ensure this climber has something to grow up against, either a fence, trellis or use canes to create a structure.

Prune to shape after flowering if required.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Colour ahead of the crowd

Nodding blue bells open in mid spring, well before the large-flowered clematis wake, filling the awkward colour gap after the bulbs finish.

Feeds early bumblebees

Open bell flowers give queen bumblebees an accessible feed just as they emerge from hibernation, when forage is still scarce in the garden.

Thrives on cold walls

Alpine blood makes this one of the toughest clematis, settling happily on cold, exposed fences where showier varieties sulk.

About This Plant

Blue Dancer is a form of the alpine clematis, a species found scrambling through scrub high in the mountains of central Europe. The long slender sepals twist as they hang, catching every breeze, and once they fall the plant carries silky silver seedheads well into summer, sometimes joined by a scatter of late blooms.

Little is asked of the gardener. Flowers form on growth made the previous year, so keep pruning to a light tidy straight after the display, and shade the roots with a stone slab or some low planting. Given that, it will quietly furnish a fence for years without ever becoming a thug.
