What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Almond scent in March

Clouds of pink-white flowers release a sweet almond fragrance that drifts across the garden in early spring, weeks before most climbers stir.

Evergreen privacy screen

Glossy, leathery leaves stay dense through winter, turning a bare fence or wall into year-round green cover for privacy.

Holds the RHS award

An RHS Award of Garden Merit confirms reliable performance in British conditions, one of only a handful of evergreen clematis so honoured.

About This Plant

The species behind this climber grows wild in the gorges of central and western China and commemorates Armand David, the French missionary naturalist who first recorded it. Apple Blossom is its best-loved form, deep pink in bud and paling as each flower unfurls, with young shoots flushed bronze before they mature.

Vigour is the thing to plan for. Give it a strong, generous support, and be patient with young plants, which often take a season or two to hit their stride. Shelter from cold east winds protects the early buds, and any tidying is best done as soon as flowering ends.
