Deep pink flowers with a bright yellow centre.

Hanagaruma is large flowering variety blooming in May and June, with a second flush in August and September.

The large, cheery pink bloom on this wonderful Clematis are sure to brighten up a fence or wall in the garden throughout the Summer months.

Plant in full sun or partial shade and remember to ensure this climber has something to grow up against, either a fence, trellis or use canes to create a structure.

To create the best displays prune in late February back to the highest and strongest set of buds.  After the first flush of flowers has passed prune again to half way along the stems to encourage a second flush.  Please note that this Clematis will flower on the previous years wood so it is important to not cut back too ground level as this will sacrifice the flowers.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Two seasons of bloom

Large deep pink flowers with a golden centre open in May and June, then a second flush follows in August and September.

A landing pad for pollinators

Each wide, flat bloom holds its yellow stamens in the open, an easy pollen stop for the bumblebees and hoverflies working the garden.

Manageable cover for fences

Vigorous enough to dress a fence panel or wall in colour, yet restrained enough that it never swamps its neighbours.

About This Plant

Hanagaruma was raised in Japan, and the name translates loosely as flower wheel, a nod to the neat spoke-like arrangement of its broad pink tepals. Japanese breeders have produced many of the finest large-flowered clematis, and this one carries that tradition of poise and clear colour.

The blooms are big enough to cut for a shallow bowl indoors, where they last surprisingly well. Since flowers come on the previous year's wood, keep pruning light: tidy back to strong buds in late February, then shorten stems by half after the first flush to coax the later one.
