Evergreen Clematis with sweetly scented flowers.

A wonderful addition to the Winter garden - Clematis Jingle Bells gives a profusion of sweetly scented bell shaped blooms from December through to February.

The nodding flowers are green/cream in colour and bear a beautiful fragrance.

Plant in full sun or part shade and ensure you give this climber something to climb up such as trellis, fence or wall.

Minimal pruning is required for this Clematis - simply prune to shape a required after flowering.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Citrus scent in winter

Grown against a warm, sunny wall, the cream bells release a light citrus fragrance at a time of year when scent is scarce.

Evergreen winter cover

Fine, dark evergreen foliage keeps a trellis or bare wall clothed right through winter, while most other climbers stand leafless.

Forage for early bees

Nodding bells open in the coldest months, giving winter-active bumblebees a rare source of food when the garden holds little else.

About This Plant

This is a selection of Clematis cirrhosa, a species from the Mediterranean, and its calendar runs accordingly. Growth and flower come through the cooler months, then the plant often rests in high summer, sometimes browning a few leaves as it pauses. Silky seedheads follow the bells and hold their shimmer for weeks.

Shelter is the care job that counts. Site it out of cold winds on free-draining soil, and it will need almost nothing else from you. Pruning stays minimal: a light tidy to shape once flowering finishes, since next season's bells form on the growth made afterwards.
