Semi-double pink blooms

Clematis Montana Broughton Star is the perfect Clematis to grow if you want to cover a wall or fence quickly and with stunning results.

Broughton Star bears an abundance of lightly fragranced, semi double, pink blooms in May and June.

The new foliage on this fabulous plant starts flushed with bronze before maturing to a deep green.

Plant in full sun or part shade for best results.  A low maintenance variety, Broughton Star does not require regular pruning - simply prune to shape as required after flowering.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

An RHS award holder

The RHS Award of Garden Merit recognises it as one of the most dependable montana clematis for British gardens.

A rare semi-double montana

Semi-double blooms are scarce among montana clematis, and this one carries its starry deep pink flowers in sheets through May and June.

Bronze young foliage

New leaves emerge flushed bronze before deepening to green, so the plant earns its place even before the first buds open.

About This Plant

Vince and Sylvia Denny raised this montana near Preston in the 1980s and named it after Broughton, their Lancashire parish. It comes from Clematis montana var. rubens breeding, and on warm days the massed blooms carry a light, sweet fragrance that drifts from a wall or pergola.

Give it a strong support and room to run, then largely leave it alone. No routine pruning is needed; if it outgrows its space, trim immediately after flowering so next year's buds have the whole season to form. Considered restrained by montana standards, it still fills a pergola handsomely.
