A climbing hydrangea with unusual grey green foliage and white edges. In summer clusters of white flowers adorn the plant.
This deciduous plant has attractive dark brown woody stems and aerial roots which self cling to walls and fences. Simply dig a hole approximately 30cm away from the wall and angle the plant towards the wall so that its stem is touching the wall. Over a few weeks this plant will attach itself to the wall or fence. Hydrangea petiolaris Silver Lining will thrive in north facing aspects in moist but free draining soil.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Thrives on north walls

Happily clothes cold, sunless walls and fences where little else will flower, turning the most difficult side of the house into a feature.

Silvered foliage all season

Grey green leaves edged and marbled with white read as a shimmer of light from a distance, brightening shade from spring to leaf fall.

Summer flowers for insects

Lacecap clusters of white summer flowers hold plenty of open nectar, and hoverflies and bees visit steadily on still, warm days.

About This Plant

Dutch nursery Huisman selected Silver Lining as a variegated sport of the familiar climbing hydrangea, and the pattern has proved admirably stable from year to year. In winter the leafless stems show peeling, cinnamon brown bark pressed against the wall, so the plant earns its keep even when completely bare.

Patience is the main requirement. Climbing hydrangeas spend a year or two building roots before extending much new growth, so plant a hand span out from the wall, lean the stems in, and let the aerial roots take hold unaided. Water steadily through dry spells until it is clearly away.
