Bright yellow blooms in January and February!

This fully hardy, deciduous shrub makes a great addition to the garden, giving many months of seasonal interest from the vibrant yellow Winter flowers to glossy red fruits that follow.

In Autumn the purple red foliage gives another wave of colour making this a hard working a low maintenance addition for a sunny/part shaded spot in the garden.

Loved by the early pollinators too.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Nectar in deep winter

Yellow flowers open in the depths of winter, well before most shrubs, giving early bumblebees and honeybees a rare source of nectar and pollen.

Thrives on chalk

Happy on thin chalk soils and in exposed spots, it copes with conditions that defeat fussier shrubs, and needs only light pruning.

Fruit and autumn tints

Glossy red, cherry-like fruits follow the flowers and ripen as the foliage turns purple-red, carrying colour well into autumn.

About This Plant

Cornus mas, the cornelian cherry, grows wild across central and southern Europe into western Asia, where it has long been valued for its fruit as much as its flowers. In the garden it builds slowly into a dense, twiggy shrub, opening its tiny yellow clusters on bare wood while winter still holds.

Little intervention is needed. It sits in pruning group one, so any shaping is best done straight after flowering, before the fruit sets. The red fruits are edible and sharp, good for jellies if the birds leave you any. Give it time, as flowering can be shy for the first few years after planting.
