About This Plant

Cotinus coggygria grows wild across southern Europe and into China, and 'Royal Purple' is a long-established selection prized for the depth of its leaf colour. The wine-dark foliage holds its tone through the warmer months rather than greening, which sets it apart from ordinary forms of the species.

As a background shrub it asks for very little. A hard prune in late winter every year or two keeps the growth dense and the leaves large, though this trades away some of the summer plumes, so many gardeners prune lightly and accept a looser shape.
