Let’s face it, January to March can be a pretty awkward time of the year in our gardens and wouldn’t it be satisfying to have a plant that will not only flower during this period but will also produce an amazing scent? Voila! - here is it, Daphne Perfume Princess!

As the name suggests, this Daphne really is a Perfume Princess. From the deep pink buds emerge clusters of pale pink flowers, turning white with maturity and throughout this whole time, giving off a heavenly scent. Why not also cut a few stems and also appreciate the wonderful fragrance indoors! The foliage is evergreen giving the bonus of all year-round colour too, this really is a winner and surely a must have in any garden bed/border or container on your patio or balcony.

Hardy and ready to bloom year after year with just a light prune after flowering, what a lovely gift this would make too. Winter colour at its best with an abundance of fragrance and evergreen foliage, what is there not to love about this stunning plant!

Supplied as an established plant in a 2 litre pot, this Daphne Perfume Princess

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent on cold air

The fragrance carries a long way on cold still air, filling a corner of the garden from deep winter into early spring.

Cut for the house

A few stems cut for a vase scent a whole room, giving indoor fragrance during the months when little else is out.

Nectar for early bees

Early flowers give nectar to the first bees on the wing, one of the few shrubs feeding them before spring properly begins.

About This Plant

Mark Jury bred this daphne at Tikorangi in New Zealand, crossing Daphne bholua with Daphne odora and spending the best part of a decade on it from the mid-1990s. He nearly gave up before the scent and the unusually large flowers convinced him to name and release it.

Deep pink buds open to pale pink flowers that fade almost to white, and they can run some way down the stem when the plant is growing strongly. The scent is sweet and spicy with a citrus edge. Give it free-draining, slightly acid soil and a light prune once flowering ends.
