An all year interest multi stemmed shrub.

In Spring the foliage opens from light green fading to dark green. Each glossy surfaced leaf has 3 heavy veins and ruffled edges giving an interesting foliage shape.
In August, 7 white flowers open on each cluster which are lightly fragrant and delicate on the eye. When these innocent blooms drop vivid red calyx appear in complete contrast to the flowers and remain on show until November.

In autumn its leaves may gain a purple hue and when they drop to reveal stunning peeling bark on its woody stems for the winter.

Generally an easy shrub to grow which requires full sun and a sheltered position.
Prune in late winter to early spring removing any unwanted growth to an outward facing bud.

Supplied as a 2 litre pot grown plant measuring approximately 40cm high

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Late nectar for bees

Fragrant white flower clusters open in late summer when most shrubs have finished, drawing bees and butterflies to a feast at a lean time of year.

Red after the flowers

As the blooms fade, the sepals swell and turn deep cherry red, giving the shrub a second colour display that holds well into autumn.

Bark for the winter

Once the leaves drop, tan bark peels back in strips along the woody stems, adding structure and texture to the garden through the coldest months.

About This Plant

Heptacodium miconioides comes from China, where it grows so rarely in the wild that it was once thought close to extinction. Temple of Bloom is a compact selection introduced by Proven Winners, bred to flower earlier and colour up more reliably than the wild species, which matters in cooler British summers where the display can otherwise run short of time.

Through the year it shifts character constantly, from ruffled three-veined leaves in spring to scented flowers, then red calyces, then bare peeling stems. Grow it in a sheltered spot and keep pruning light, taking out only crossing or wayward growth in late winter so the multi-stemmed shape stays open.
