Colour changing lace cap type blooms.

Glabra Crug Coral is a stunning variety of climbing Hydrangeas which bears colour changing flowers during the summer months.

The lace cap type blooms start a coral pink colour before transitioning to soft pink and cream. During the Autumn months, foliage turns shades of bronze and burgundy for additional interest.

Being a climbing form, grow up a fence, trellis or wall.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Clothes a shady wall

As it matures this climber grips brick or timber with its own aerial roots, covering a cool, north-facing wall without wires or ties.

Autumn leaf colour

Before they drop, the leaves turn shades of bronze and burgundy, adding a second season of interest once the flowers are over.

Open flowers for bees

The flat lacecap heads carry small fertile flowers that bees and hoverflies can reach easily, drawing pollinators onto an otherwise bare wall.

About This Plant

'Crûg Coral' comes from Crûg Farm in north Wales, the nursery run by plant hunters Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones, and traces back to their wild collecting of this East Asian climbing hydrangea. The lacecap heads open a dusky coral red, then soften through pink to cream as the weeks pass.

Give it time. Like most climbing hydrangeas it can sit for a season or two before it takes hold, then grows away strongly. Tie the young stems in until the roots grip, and keep pruning to a light trim once flowering ends, taking back any shoots that stray beyond their space.
