New breeding of Hydrangea from one of the worlds leading Hydrangea specialists.

Hi-Fire is a Macrophylla or Mop Head type Hydrangea which bears large balls of flowers.

The beautiful blooms are red in colour and start off with a green-tinge to the centre.

A compact vairety, ideally suited for growing in pots and containers on the patio but will be equally happy in beds and borders.

Supplied as 1 x 4.5ltr shrub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Red on limy soil

On neutral or chalky soils these mopheads stay a deep red, holding colour where many blue and pink hydrangeas turn muddy and uncertain.

Sized for a pot

Its compact, bushy shape suits a large container by the door or on the patio, bringing full-size mophead flowers to a small garden.

Structure through winter

Left in place, the faded heads catch frost through winter and shelter next year's buds, so hold off cutting them until spring.

About This Plant

Hi-Fire is a recent bigleaf hydrangea from specialist Dutch breeders, selected for compact growth and strong flower colour. The mophead blooms open with a green cast at the centre before deepening to red, and on more acid soils that red shifts towards purple, since bigleaf hydrangeas take their colour from the ground they grow in.

In a pot it needs steady watering, as containers dry out fast and a thirsty plant sulks. To keep the flowers firmly red, grow it in neutral to slightly limy compost, or add a little garden lime. It flowers on both old and new stems, so prune lightly, just above healthy buds.
