A fabulous variety of Hydrangea paniculata. A fast but compact variety which has 40cm long panicles of flowers which start cream and fade to pink with red woody stems and light green foliage.
A super plant for the border or as a small hedge or planted in a container as a focal point.
Little pruning required just prune out any damaged or unwanted stems in late winter.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

An RHS award winner

Pinky Winky carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, the society's marker for varieties that perform dependably in ordinary garden conditions.

Two colours on one cone

Each 40cm panicle keeps producing fresh white florets at its tip while the older base turns pink, giving a two-tone effect through late summer.

No staking needed

Stiff, upright stems hold the long flower heads clear of the ground even after heavy summer rain, so the shrub stands without support.

About This Plant

Bred in 2003 by Dr Johan Van Huylenbroeck at the Melle research station near Ghent, Pinky Winky came from a Belgian programme selecting for stronger stems and longer flower heads. Young foliage is a fresh light green, and the leaf stalks and new wood take on a deep red that sets off the blooms.

Blooms form on the current season's shoots, which makes pruning forgiving. In March cut last year's growth back to a low framework of buds and the plant rebuilds quickly. It copes with most soils, asking only for reasonable drainage and a mulch of compost each spring.
