What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Colour in deep winter

Bright yellow flowers open along bare green stems through January and February, bringing colour to the garden when most shrubs sit dormant and leafless.

RHS award holder

Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a recognition earned for dependable performance and steady flowering in gardens across Britain.

Food for early bees

The midwinter blooms give early bumblebees a rare source of nectar on mild days, when almost nothing else in the garden is flowering.

About This Plant

Robert Fortune sent this climbing shrub back from China to Britain in the 1840s, and it has kept its place in winter gardens ever since. The slender green stems arch and trail, carrying their flowers on bare wood before the small dark leaves unfold. The flowers themselves carry no scent.

Grown against a wall or fence, the lax stems need tying in, since left loose they root wherever they touch the soil. Cut back the flowered shoots once the display fades in spring, which keeps the plant tidy and draws out fresh growth for the following year.
