This Kalmia simply has to be one of my favourite evergreen shrubs!

Crinkled dark pink buds open into showy clusters of delicate pale pink flowers with dark pink/burgundy splashes during May and June and they really do produce an amazing show especially as this variety has particularly large flowers measuring up to 4cm in diameter!

Kalmia is an ericaceous plant which simply means that ericaceous compost should be used when planting up into a suitable pot or you can add sulphur soil to your planting hole.

This evergreen beauty will hold onto its glossy green leaves all year round and is also shade tolerant and fully hardy. Being more compact than other varieties is a real bonus as it is ideal for growing in pots and containers.

Supplied as an established pot grown shrub in a 4 Litre Pot approximately 30cm high

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Extra-large flower clusters

The showy trusses carry some of the biggest blooms found on any mountain laurel, each flower reaching close to four centimetres across.

Glossy leaves all year

Leathery, deep green leaves stay on the shrub through winter, holding structure and colour in the border when many plants have died back.

Happy in dappled shade

It flowers well in part shade under taller trees or on a north-facing border, thriving where many flowering shrubs would sulk.

About This Plant

Ginkona is a mountain laurel, a shrub from the acid woodlands of eastern North America, selected for the largest flowers the species has produced, close to four centimetres wide. Crimped buds patterned like piped icing open to pale petals ringed with burgundy, while the leathery foliage keeps its shine once the flowers have gone.

Give it acidic ground, working ericaceous compost or a little sulphur into the planting hole, then mulch with leaf mould to keep the roots cool and moist. Once the trusses brown, snap them off so the plant puts its strength into next year's buds rather than seed. Beyond that, it asks for very little.
