Unusual and curious white blooms.

Kalmia latifolia is an unusual, low maintenance, evergreen shrub that is fully hardy .

Snowdrift is a stunning little variety, growing to around 100cm in height and spread. Kalmia flowers are often described as being 'octagonal' due to their intricate shape and appear from May to July each year.

Snowdrift bears pink tinged buds which open to reveal pure white flowers with a pink pattern. Simply exquisite!

Plants will thrive in containers or borders, but being acid lovers will benefit from ericaceous compost or Fed N Done Ericaceous Plant Food.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Buds open pure white

Pink-flushed buds unfold into finely moulded white cups shaped like tiny umbrellas, lighting up a shaded corner through late spring and into summer.

Springs pollen onto bees

Each flower keeps its stamens bent under tension until a bee lands, then flicks pollen across its back, so the blooms stay busy with visitors.

Evergreen and compact

Glossy green foliage clothes the shrub all winter, and it builds slowly into a neat, rounded shape without sending out runners.

About This Plant

The white-flowered Snowdrift belongs to a run of American mountain laurels bred by Richard Jaynes, who spent a career improving the species in Connecticut. Buds flushed with pink open to finely moulded, near-octagonal cups of pure white, each one held on a shrub that keeps its glossy green leaves once the show is over.

Like all mountain laurels it wants acidic soil, so plant with ericaceous compost and top with a loose mulch that holds moisture at the roots. Removing the spent flower heads before they set seed keeps the following year's flowering generous. A sheltered spot out of drying wind suits it best.
