One of the deepest coloured Magnolias we know!

Bearing cup-shaped deep pink, almost burgundy, blooms in Spring. Flowers are reminiscent of tulips in shape - hence the name.

Blooms appear on naked stems making them even more striking in appearance. Foliage then appears later in Spring.

Simply plants in full sun or part shade and feed twice a year with a slow release fertiliser.

Suitable for beds and borders or large pots.

Supplied as 1 x 4 litre plant

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Blooms on bare wood

Deep burgundy blooms open on leafless stems in spring, so the tulip-shaped flowers read clearly against bare wood before any foliage arrives.

Fragrance in spring

The spring flowers carry a light fragrance that drifts across a border on still days, drawing you in for a closer look.

Best colour in sun

Given an open, sunny spot the burgundy tone deepens, while a little afternoon shade in hot gardens keeps the blooms from fading early.

About This Plant

Black Tulip belongs to the family of magnolias raised by Mark Jury in New Zealand, a breeding line known for saturated colour. It came from crossing the reddish 'Vulcan' with a lily-flowered parent, and Jury's work in this field later earned him the Veitch Memorial Medal from the RHS.

After the flowers fade, mid-green leaves fill out and carry the shrub quietly through summer and autumn. It asks for little beyond a slow-release feed twice a year and a sheltered spot, since late frosts can brown the open petals. Prune only to shape, just after flowering, to avoid cutting off next year's buds.
