Looking for an unusual tree perfect for a more petite sized garden? This remarkable evergreen Magnolia, Little Gem would be ideal!

The tactile dark green leaves have a furry, rusty orange underside with gorgeous, lightly fragranced, white cup shaped blooms appearing in August and September which is an unusual time for Magnolias to flower creating a wonderful talking point.

This tree has been specifically selected for its compact nature and will not take over your outdoor space, an ideal tree for smaller gardens and courtyard areas.

Low maintenance and preferring sunny, sheltered sites this shrub is great on its own or trained against a sunny wall.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Winter structure that stays

The broad, glossy leaves hold through winter, giving a small garden solid green structure and a backdrop for lighter planting when deciduous shrubs stand bare.

Late-summer flowers

Fragrant white cups open in late summer, an unusual season for a magnolia to bloom and a talking point when most spring flowers are long gone.

Made for small spaces

Slow and compact by nature, it suits a courtyard or a sunny wall, where it can be trained flat without outgrowing a tight space.

About This Plant

Little Gem is a selection of the southern magnolia, a species native to the south-eastern United States. It was chosen in North Carolina for its neat, upright frame and its habit of flowering from a young age, rather than making a person wait many years as the full species does.

The real signature is underneath each leaf, where a felted, rust-brown suede covers the reverse and catches the light in a breeze. Give it a warm, sheltered site and free-draining soil, then leave it largely alone; any tidying of stray shoots is best done in spring once the worst frosts have passed.
