What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Two-tone blooms

Each goblet opens raspberry pink on the outside and cream within, so the shrub shows two tones at once as the large blooms unfurl.

A delicate scent

A light, delicate scent rises from the open cups, carrying a little way on warm spring air near a path or doorway.

Dodges the late frosts

Blooming later than star magnolias, it often sidesteps the late frosts that can spoil earlier flowers, so the display holds in colder gardens.

About This Plant

Satisfaction belongs to the saucer magnolias, a hybrid group first raised near Paris in the early nineteenth century by Etienne Soulange-Bodin. This particular selection is a more recent one, bred for a fuller, bushier frame than many of its older relatives, which tend towards a leggy, tree-like shape.

Once the petals drop, plain green leaves take over and the plant settles into an undemanding summer. It prefers a neutral to slightly acidic soil that never dries out completely, and roots that stay undisturbed. Skip hard pruning; magnolias resent it, and a light thin after flowering is all that is usually needed.
