Herald the arrival of mid spring (Summer is soon here) with these iconic flowering shrubs.

From upright bare stems in winter large tulip shaped, lightly scented, deep purple blooms open and adorn the naked stems remaining until leaf buds open in late spring.

Susan is a beautiful rounded shrub which grows in any soil but is particularly useful in clay soils and slightly acidic soils.

Magnolias are slow growing plants which prefer sheltered sites away from strong winds.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS award holder

Named an RHS Award of Garden Merit plant in 1993, a mark of reliable performance judged over years of trial.

Light scent on the air

The deep purple, tulip-shaped blooms carry a light scent that drifts on still spring air near a path or a doorway.

Dodges the frost

Bred to open later than star magnolias, it sidesteps the early frosts that so often brown the blooms of its cousins.

About This Plant

William Kosar raised Susan at the United States National Arboretum in 1956, crossing Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' with Magnolia stellata 'Rosea'. It belongs to the Little Girl group of eight sister hybrids. Buds start almost black, then open to rich purple-pink, each tepal given a slight twist that catches the light.

Growth is slow, so little pruning is needed beyond removing any dead or crossing wood after flowering. A sheltered site away from strong winds protects the soft blooms. It settles happily into clay and slightly acid ground, and a yearly mulch helps young plants establish.
