Pink to Ruby coloured blooms over a long period.

An evergreen variety of Magnolia that bears flowers over an exceptionally long period - from March through to September.

Attractive, glossy green foliage and cup-shaped blooms from pink to deep ruby in colour. The flowers on this Magnolia have a fruity, distinctive fragrance too.

Drought tolerant once established, these Magnolias have a naturally slim and tall habit and can be grown in beds and borders or large containers.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

A long season of colour

Flowers keep coming over many weeks, opening pink and deepening to ruby, so the show builds in waves across a long season.

An unusual fruity scent

The blooms give off a fruity scent unusual among magnolias, noticeable up close and worth planting near a seat or a much-used path.

Evergreen through winter

Once its roots are settled it copes with dry spells, and the glossy evergreen leaves stay put through winter for year-round cover.

About This Plant

Stellar Ruby was bred by Pat McCracken in Zebulon, North Carolina, from two forms of Magnolia figo, the group gardeners often call banana shrubs. He made the cross in 2004 and selected this plant a few years later for its rich flower colour and its willingness to bloom young.

The upright, narrow shape means it takes up little ground while still reaching well overhead, useful where width is short. Grow it in soil that drains freely and water through the first summer or two until it establishes. After that it needs little beyond an occasional feed and light trimming to keep the outline neat.
