What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent for paths and patios

Clusters of creamy white flowers release a sweet orange blossom fragrance strong enough to reach a path or patio seat several metres away.

An RHS award winner

Manteau d'Hermine holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognition of flower power and reliable behaviour in the Society's garden trials.

A mock orange for pots

Among the smallest mock oranges, it stays neat in a patio container, bringing summer perfume to balconies and courtyard gardens.

About This Plant

Victor Lemoine, the celebrated nurseryman of Nancy in France, raised Manteau d'Hermine at the close of the nineteenth century, and the name translates as ermine cloak, after the way the milky double flowers drape its branches. Out of flower it makes a fine-twigged, small-leaved bush that recedes quietly into the border.

Flowers come on wood made the previous summer, so prune as soon as the blooms fade, taking a share of the older flowered stems back to vigorous new shoots. Skip winter pruning altogether. A mulch of garden compost in spring keeps the roots cool and the growth coming.
