Cascading branches laden with double flowering blooms.

Philadelphus Minnesota Snowflake is a fabulous shrub which bear masses of double white blooms on cascading stems from May to July.

The highly fragrant flowers give this fantastic garden shrub its common name of the Mock Orange.

Minnesota Snowflake will grow quite large eventually if left to its own devices which may be handy if you want to fill a gap in the garden. Alternatively you can keeps it in check by pruning to shape after flowering. Fully hardy, deciduous shrub.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Perfume across the garden

Masses of double white blooms carry the classic mock orange scent, sweet and citrusy, drifting well beyond the shrub on warm June evenings.

Arching stems of bloom

Flowers line the length of each cascading branch rather than clustering at the tips, so the whole shrub reads as white from a distance.

Built for hard winters

Bred to survive Minnesota winters, it takes frost pockets and exposed gardens in its stride, flowering reliably however hard the previous winter has been.

About This Plant

In Minneapolis, nurseryman Guy Bush raised Minnesota Snowflake and named it for his home state. It belongs to the virginalis group of hybrid mock oranges, plants with an old-fashioned generosity of bloom, and over the years it builds into a broad, rounded shrub whose older stems develop attractive peeling bark.

Give it room from the start, or plan on a firm hand. Pruning happens straight after flowering, removing two or three of the oldest stems at ground level each year so fresh flowering wood keeps coming. Beyond that it asks for little, tolerating most soils including chalk.
