A heady vanilla scent is what makes this plant stand out from the crowd.

Preferring a shady spot the deep green glossy, reflective, leaves bounce the available light around themselves and its unusually shaped fluffy white flowers adorn the length of its stems from winter to spring.

Plants may carry bluey black berries after flowering but its is recommended these are left for the birds only.

A slow growing shrub which requires little attention prune any unwanted growth back to the main frame in spring after flowering has finished.

Preferring neutral to acidic soil, so plant in containers in ericaceous compost if in chalky soil areas.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent in deep winter

Small tufted flowers throw a heavy vanilla fragrance across the winter garden, strong enough to stop you on a path several feet away.

Thrives in dry shade

Deep shade under trees, city pollution and general neglect leave it unbothered, filling difficult dark corners where little else will grow.

Food for bees and birds

The winter flowers give early bees a rare nectar source, and the black berries that follow are left for birds.

About This Plant

Sweet box has never been found growing wild, and its exact home somewhere in China or the eastern Himalaya stays a matter of guesswork; it has been in cultivation since around 1916. The odd name comes from its flowers, which cannot settle on whether two stigmas or three is the better arrangement.

It grows slowly and holds glossy evergreen leaves that bounce what light there is around a shady bed. Little pruning is wanted; if a stem outgrows its place, cut it back to the main framework in spring once the flowers have gone. It prefers neutral to acid ground, so on chalk grow it in a pot of ericaceous compost.
