A sweet fragrance and pretty blooms.

Syringa Miss Kim is a must in have in the garden for a lover of lilacs.

This RHS Award of Garden Merit winning variety of Lilac bears purple buds that will open to reveal pale purple flowers.  Flowers then fade with age to an off-white colour giving a wonderful tonal effect.  Flowers have a beautiful sweet scent and are loved by the bees and butterflies.

The foliage is dark green in colour with wavy edges to the leaves adding to the overall display.  Foliage then turns red and purple in Autumn to give wonderful seasonal colour in the garden.

Miss Kim flowers in May and June each year and will reach around 250cm height, 200cm spread.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Sweet carrying scent

The sweet, clove-like scent of the flowers carries on warm air, noticeable several steps from the shrub along a path or near a doorway.

Bees and butterflies

Bees and butterflies work the small tubular florets steadily while they are open, drawn by nectar held deep in each pale purple bloom.

Autumn leaf colour

When flowering ends the wavy-edged leaves earn their place, turning shades of red and burgundy in autumn for a second season of colour.

About This Plant

Miss Kim traces back to seed gathered in Korea in 1947 by the American plant breeder Elwin Meader, who selected this compact, late-blooming form of the Korean lilac. It flowers a touch later than common lilac and on a smaller frame, which has kept it a favourite where garden space is tight.

Prune as soon as the flowers fade, because next year's buds form on this season's wood and later cutting takes them off. A resistance to the powdery mildew that troubles many lilacs keeps the foliage clean into autumn, when it colours before dropping. Little else is asked of it once the roots take hold.
