A colourful delight for the garden which makes an impressive show when planted in front of a fence or other contrasting background.

Its bare twiggy stems in winter are soon covered with a delightful green and cream edged leaf. In early summer hundreds of tubular shaped light pink non scented blooms cover the plant and are loved by pollinating insects.

Easy to care for this Weigela will grow in a container too.
When established simply prune each year in midsummer after flowering, removing one or two of the older stems to the base and cutting back the flowered stems to strong shoots below the spent flowers to shape.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark that it performs reliably in gardens and stands up to normal growing conditions.

Cream-edged leaves

Green leaves edged in cream light up a shady corner, brightening a fence or dark background from spring until the leaves drop.

Loved by pollinators

Hundreds of tubular pink flowers open in early summer and pull in bees and other pollinating insects despite carrying no scent of their own.

About This Plant

Variegata is one of the older variegated weigelas, descended from Weigela florida, the Far Eastern species brought into cultivation in 1848. Bare twiggy stems in the cold months give way to cream-margined leaves, and the whole shrub reads brighter than most from the moment it comes into leaf.

Prune once a year in midsummer after the flowers fade. Take out one or two of the oldest stems at the base, then shorten the flowered growth to strong shoots below the spent blooms, which keeps the shape open and the variegation fresh.
