Intriguing foliage and exciting colour contrasts.

Wine and Roses displays captivating bronze/maroon foliage which deepens in colour with maturity giving an exciting contrast against the vibrant pink flowers in late Spring and early Summer.

Creating a fabulous dome of foliage and covered in flowers during the warmer months, this Weigela would be perfect in your garden border or used to create a screen or hedge.

Prune to shape after flowering and a slow-release fertiliser in Spring and Autumn would be ideal.

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown plant which is approximately 30cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Dusky purple leaves

Bronze and maroon foliage deepens as the shrub matures, holding a warm, dusky tone that works behind silver or lime-green planting in a border.

Feeds foraging bees

The pink flowers carry nectar that bees work through the warmer months, so the plant earns its place for foraging insects as well as colour.

An informal screen

Dense, dome-shaped growth makes it useful as an informal low screen or hedge, filling a boundary with dark leaf and pink flower together.

About This Plant

Wine and Roses is the trade name for Weigela florida 'Alexandra', a form selected for the depth of its purple-bronze leaf. The colour intensifies as the season runs on, and hot-pink blooms open against it in the first flush before the foliage carries interest onward.

Feed matters more here than with plain green weigelas. A slow-release fertiliser in spring and again in autumn keeps the leaf colour strong, and a light prune to shape after the main flush stops the dome growing leggy over time.
