What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The RHS Award of Garden Merit backs this form, so it has been judged a dependable performer worth space on a wall or pergola.

Scent on the air

Trusses hanging up to 60cm release a sweet fragrance that drifts on the air, scenting a seating area or path as you pass.

Curtains of bloom

Long racemes of pink and purple, touched with yellow, hang in a curtain of colour that few climbers match in early summer.

About This Plant

Honbeni, also sold as Rosea, is a pink-flowered Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda), the species with the longest flower trusses of any wisteria. Buds open from the top of each raceme downward, so the trailing chains lengthen and colour up over several days into full hanging bloom.

Two prunings a year keep flowering strong. Cut the whippy summer growth back to about five leaves in July or August, then shorten the same shoots to two or three buds in winter, which builds the short spurs that carry next year's racemes.
