Also known as the Pincushion flower due to its beautiful flower form.

Scabiosa Butterfly Blue bears masses of lavender-blue flowers over a long flowering period. Flowering from July through to September and often in the spring too, the blooms are held above long, delicate, wiry, looking stems and attractive grey green foliage.

The flowers, as the common name suggests, are highly attractive to butterflies and bees and make great cut flowers or can be used for dried flower arrangements.

Plants are fully hardy and can be used in both beds and borders or pots and containers.

Supplied as 1x 2 litre pot grown plants or 3x 2 litre plants measuring approx. 10-20cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

A butterfly magnet

The nectar-rich pincushion flowers draw in butterflies and bees over a long summer season, and the plant earns its common name from the butterflies that work the blooms.

Cut and dried flowers

The lavender-blue blooms sit on long wiry stems and last well once cut, useful for small posies and for drying into winter arrangements.

Plant of the Year

Named the Perennial Plant Association's Plant of the Year in 2000, recognised for its long flowering run and reliable, compact habit.

About This Plant

The plantsman David Tristram came across this pincushion flower in an Irish garden and grew it on from cuttings, first in Ireland and later in his Sussex garden, before it reached the wider trade in the early 1980s. Its parent species, Scabiosa columbaria, grows wild on the chalk grasslands of Britain and Europe.

The flowering keeps going for weeks if you deadhead spent blooms as they fade. Stems stand up on their own and need no staking. What the plant will not forgive is a cold, wet winter with its roots sitting in water, so give it sharp drainage and lift and divide congested clumps in spring.
