Ideally plant this somewhere you can take a seat and appreciate the plants movements in the breeze.

This cute, tufty, evergreen shrub displays slender, arching, orangey brown leaves which curl at the tips adding something a little bit different to your outside space with brown, flowering spikes in late Summer.

Also known at ‘Leatherleaf Sedge’ this versatile shrub would be a perfect addition to a gravelled area, rockery or even in a container with the foliage moving in the breeze. Occasionally remove any dead or damaged stems to give an all year-round garden charm.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2 litre pot, this Carex Red Rooster measures approximately 25-30cm on receipt.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Bronze colour all winter

Upright copper coloured leaves hold their glow right through winter, catching low sun and frost when most planting has gone quiet.

Made for gravel gardens

Its tufted shape and curling leaf tips suit gravel, rockeries and pots, where every breeze sets the whole clump moving.

Left alone by deer

The tough, leathery foliage that earned it the name leatherleaf sedge holds little appeal for browsing deer, so clumps stay intact through the year.

About This Plant

Red Rooster is a selection of Carex buchananii, a sedge from New Zealand named after the nineteenth century botanist John Buchanan. Chosen for a more upright stance than the species, it makes a neat russet column of fine leaves, each one finishing in a small pale curl at the tip.

Bronze sedges dislike hard pruning, so tidy this one by running gloved fingers through the clump in spring, teasing out the dead leaves. Water it well through its first summer while the roots settle in, after which the odd deep soak in a long dry spell keeps it looking fresh.
