Lonicera Halls Prolific

Japanese honeysuckle is native to eastern Asia, and this cultivar was picked out for the sheer number of flowers it carries. It is semi-evergreen in a mild winter, holding some of its leaves rather than dropping bare, and it climbs by twining its twiggy stems, so it wants a trellis, wires or an old tree to scramble through.

Growth is quick and can turn into a tangle if left alone. Prune in early spring, taking out old and crowded stems to keep air moving through the middle, since a congested, dry plant is the one that picks up mildew. A light trim after the main flush tidies wayward shoots. Give it room and it needs little else.
